In the Beginning...

Where to Start with L.E.D.

Freedom & Simplicity™ of Lifestyle Education through Discipleship™

flower border

The concepts and methods of Lifestyle Education through Discipleship™ may be so totally foreign to you that you look at the philosophy here and say, "I don’t have a clue how to start, where do I begin?" If that’s you - you agree with what we’re saying, but need a hand to hold for a while, this page is for you. While we don’t want the Hodgen home to be a cookie-cutter for anyone, we realize you may need some specifics at first. We trust that as you grow, in hearing God directly for your children’s education, as well as in your confidence in following that alone, you will let go of our hand.

Here are some things you can do with your children while you are renewing your mind, to understand L.E.D. and how to apply it better. Expand components of L.E.D. as you internalize them, that is whenever you can understand them and present them to your children.

  • Sola ScripturaEverything we do is based on Scripture alone. That doesn’t mean the Bible is the only book we use in our home. It does mean that the "earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof." We do not study anything without looking at it from God’s point of view and looking for His hand in it. Get in the Word together.
  • Journaling – We record what God is doing in our lives. This isn’t just a diary or log but anything He’s laying on our hearts and minds – what we are thinking about and what we are learning. Everyone, start writing your thoughts.
  • Phillipians 4:8 Life-changing Literature – Family read-aloud time is the foundation of our learning. In addition to the Bible, we read real interesting stories of faith and virtue – biographies, historical narratives, even historical and virtuous fiction, to learn of God, His World, His Plan and Ways in this world and in our lives. Start reading great books together.
  • Copywork and Dictation– We Copy the great writing of those that have gone before us – to learn both content and how to write. Everyone, start carefully copying great things worth learning from.
  • Narration – We re-tell the stories we read – to learn to be good speakers and writers. Everyone, start talking about when you are reading and learning. Learn to be storytellers, and convey ideas to others.
  • Notebooks – We compile our loves and our learning to create records and presentations of our Life Message. Everyone, begin to learn to document and organize what you are learning. These will become great presentations for you to remember from, and others to learn from. These Notebooks/Journals can take many forms. Be creative. Lapbook, scrapbook, illustrate, ....

If you have any questions on any of these methods, check our blog for related posts, or email and ask.

This simplified overview comes from the Freedom and Simplicity™ of Lifestyle Education through Discipleship™ ~ the Seminar - a full-day seminar presenting not only the Philosophy, Principles, and Practical Application of L.E.D., but also Times of Refreshing, Reflection, and Renewing the Mind. Hands-on Discipleship yoU! exercises will help you integrate L.E.D. into your own life.
