Cloth For Mama

If you've never tried cloth menstrual pads, you probably think they sound really "yucky". They aren't. And once you experience their comfort you probably won't go back. No sweating, no sticking, no itching. They're breathable! There are many other reasons you may want to give them a try. Economy - much cheaper in the long run, especially if you sew your own. You'll probably only spend as much as you would in one or two months of disposables to get a necessary cloth supply that will last you years. If you buy ready-made it may cost you about what 1 year's supply of disposables cost. Health - the chemicals in disposible pads can cause thrush/yeast infections and rashes/irritations. Tampons can cause FAR worse. Cloth pads are safe for you. Some even claim less cramping and shorter flow. And of course, environmental reasons. They're safe for God's creation too. Remember, until far less than 100 years ago, EVERY woman wore cloth pads. And we now have fancy ones, like our cloth diapers.

They are really simple to sew for yourself, and care for too. For those of you that don't sew at all, you may be surprised how many companies make cloth pads. I've used the Glad Rags brand. They make a design that snaps around your underwear like "wings" (not my favorite design). Several other brands can be seen here.

Below are a few links. I used these sites strictly for the pad making information. I don't vouch for anything else you may find there - except cloth diapering info. :-)

Here's a simple pattern, an oval without wings. (Scroll down.)

Here's another pattern you can use if you want "wings".

Here's another.

This one has several styles and another page.

If you want to buy some patterns - check One Stop Diaper Shop. They have a pattern that contains several styles plus nursing pads.

Care:

After use, place in a container, either dry or with cold water. Pour a little hydrogen peroxide on them as you put them into the container. A small "rubbermade" container with a lid, that you can set on the floor near the toilet is good. Or a pretty ceramic pot with lid. When you are ready to wash, drain (if you soaked in water - you can dump it in the washer and then spin it out before washing). Wash in mild natural cleaner. Cold water will help prevent stains.

When you are out and about and need to change your pad, just fold it over and place in a bag in your purse. Make your bags aprox. 5" x7" and put a flap or zipper on it to close it. Carry two, one for fresh, one for used pads. You can use wool or nylon for your "used" bag if you're worried about leakage. There are several other ways you can make a carry bag. This one is simple.

Nursing Patterns

Elizabeth Lee Designs has the best nursing patterns I've seen or used. I've seen a lot of nursing clothes that looked like tents, or screamed "nursing outfit". Most of these don't. There's also lots of help for adjusting these patterns for maternity too - for those of us that are both pregnant and nursing at the same time. Also, children's patterns and nursing bras.

Hormonal Helps

I've never had problems with PMS or pre-menopausal symptoms. But these products come highly recommended from those I know that do, and they are from companies that I trust.
